AMD has recently launched its FidelityFX Super Resolution SDK 2.0 in conjunction with the transition to the machine learning-based FSR 4. However, in a surprising turn of events, the company inadvertently made the libraries for FSR 4 open-source through its AMD GPUOpen project, providing tech-savvy users with a glimpse into the inner workings of FSR 4. Although the files have been removed from AMD's GPUOpen library, quick individuals were able to capture screenshots of the file directory, revealing significant details.
One notable discovery was the inclusion of 8-bit integer (INT8) libraries, which require fewer resources but offer less precision compared to those utilized in RDNA 4. This suggests that there may have been intentions to release FSR 4 for AMD's RX 7000 GPUs. Initially, FSR 4 was announced as exclusive to AMD's Radeon RX 9000 series GPUs, but this recent development hints at a potential expansion.
There have been previous indications that AMD FSR 4 could be extended to older RDNA hardware, with some mod projects successfully implementing it on older devices. This latest incident serves as an official indication that AMD is exploring the possibility of porting FSR 4 to older hardware. Speculation also suggests that the INT8 libraries could be intended for the PlayStation 5 Pro, but the file format (.HLSL) indicates a focus on PC usage rather than console integration.
