AMD's GPD Win 5 Gaming Handheld Featuring Strix Halo APU
AMD's Strix Halo APU has made its debut in the gaming handheld market with the GPD Win 5. The GPD Win 5 was teased by GPD and further specifications were revealed by The Phawx on YouTube shortly after. The handheld features the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with the AMD Radeon 8060S running at a CPU power of 55-60 W. This power allows the GPD Win 5 to run games like Black Myth Wukong at over 160 FPS. The temperatures of the device seemed to be stable, with the CPU temperature fluctuating between the mid- and high 60° range and the iGPU clock speeds reaching 2300-2500 MHz.
The GPD Win 5 boasts a 7-inch, 1080p, 120 Hz display with AMD FreeSync Premium support, ten-point touch support, and 100% sRGB coverage. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6. The handheld will be available with either the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 or the AMD Ryzen AI Max 385, offering different core and thread configurations. Both APUs have a TDP of 45-75 W and come with various RAM and storage options.
The GPD Win 5 features a slide-up display with a basic keyboard, solving the issue of using on-screen keyboards. The device also includes a removable battery that can operate in a "backpack" mode or in wired mode. The cooling system includes a dual-fan, quad-heatpipe solution to accommodate the Ryzen AI Max+ 395. The handheld can operate for up to 2 hours of continuous intensive use or 6 hours during light-duty use.
GPD has confirmed that the GPD Win 5 will be showcased at Chinajoy 2025 and is expected to launch in October of this year.
