VESA Announces Updates to Front-of-Screen Performance Standards
The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) today announced updates to several of its front-of-screen performance standard and logo programs. These updates are aimed at driving the industry to produce better-quality display products for consumers and content creators. New performance tiers have been added to VESA's ClearMR standard for measuring motion blur, specifically for ultra-high-refresh-rate displays for competitive gamers, such as 480-Hz and above displays. Additionally, a new 1000 luminance performance tier has been added to VESA's DisplayHDR True Black standard to validate new OLED displays with high luminance and greater color accuracy for professional video content creation.
VESA and its member companies will showcase product demonstrations of the latest video standards, including the new ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black performance tiers, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from January 7-10. According to Roland Wooster, chairman of the VESA task group responsible for DisplayHDR True Black and ClearMR, these standards have been successful in uniting the display ecosystem behind common performance metrics to optimize display technologies and provide visually stunning experiences for consumers.
New Performance Tiers for ClearMR
VESA's ClearMR standard provides a quality metric for grading motion blur in digital displays. The Clear Motion Ratio (CMR) metric, as defined in the ClearMR standard, offers a numerical value based on the ratio of clear pixels to blurry pixels, enabling consumers to compare motion blur between VESA Certified ClearMR displays. The latest update to the ClearMR standard introduces three new performance tiers—ClearMR 15000, ClearMR 18000, and ClearMR 21000—to ensure optimal motion clarity performance for cutting-edge displays, including 480-Hz and higher refresh-rate displays.
GIGABYTE and MSI are among the companies supporting VESA's ClearMR standard, integrating it into their gaming monitors to deliver smooth, blur-free visuals and an immersive experience for gamers and content creators.
New Performance Tier for DisplayHDR True Black
DisplayHDR True Black is the industry's first open standard specifying HDR quality for emissive displays. The latest update to the standard adds a new 1000 luminance performance tier to validate OLED displays with deep black levels and higher luminance levels for professional video content creation. Companies like LG Electronics and Samsung Display are working with VESA to certify their displays according to these new standards.
