Flexible OLED Technology Advancements
Flexible OLED technology has made significant progress and is now making waves in the smartphone and tablet market. Lenovo is now looking to utilize rolling OLED displays to increase screen real estate on its laptops without increasing their overall size. According to well-known leaker Evan Blass, Lenovo is set to launch the sixth generation of its ThinkBook Plus lineup with a rollable OLED display that can extend upwards, providing a significantly larger screen area. The new ThinkBook Plus is expected to be unveiled at CES 2025, scheduled to take place between January 7 and January 10, 2025.
Based on the leaked renders and the size of the keyboard, the new ThinkBook will feature a tall screen with a 3:4 aspect ratio, approximately 14 inches in size before being fully unrolled. Once unrolled, it appears capable of accommodating two 16:9 windows stacked on top of each other. Previous models of the ThinkBook Plus included a small secondary display on the keyboard deck to the right of the keyboard. The ThinkBook Plus 13 models featured a Gen 5 hybrid model with a detachable display, while the Gen 4 variant had a 360° hinge and a color e-ink display on the back of the main OLED screen. These designs had their own limitations, such as suboptimal ergonomics in the mini screen of the 17 model or the restriction of using only one display at a time in the e-ink version.
Previous versions of the ThinkBook were also compatible with an MPP stylus for tasks like handwriting, note-taking, image editing, or sketching. It remains uncertain if the new ThinkBook Plus will support pen input, as there are no images available online showing the leaked laptop with a stylus in the same frame.
