Akasa's New Magnetic NVMe SSD Enclosure
Recently, there has been a surge in magnetic NVMe SSD enclosures hitting the market, and Akasa has now entered the competition with its own unique twist on the concept. The AK-ENU3M2-08 is designed to house a standard M.2 2230 NVMe SSD and is compatible with Apple's iPhones, allowing for direct video capture to the drive in ProRes 4K resolution. It conveniently attaches to the MagSafe connector on newer iPhones.
One standout feature of the Akasa product is the inclusion of a supercapacitor, which the company claims can provide 5-6 minutes of power for the drive in case of a sudden power loss. This serves as a safeguard against data loss. However, the practicality of this feature in real-world scenarios is questionable, as a power loss would likely result in a loss of data connection to the host device.
Another interesting aspect of the Akasa enclosure is its support for 100W USB PD passthrough, a feature not commonly found in similar devices. While the 10 Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 data interface may be slower compared to some competitors, the additional features offered by Akasa may outweigh the speed difference depending on individual use cases.
Pricing for the AK-ENU3M2-08 has not been announced yet.
